Press Release Summary = If you are not in control of light you are in a confusion of
shadows and conflicting sources. When you know how to control lights you will
amazed as to how few lights you need to make nice lighting.

Press Release Body = When lighting a scene, you first must start with the
understanding that each light has its own purpose. By building it up one by one you
stay in control and you will basically be able to imitate a natural light completely
created by yourself. Decide where your main source of light comes from and build it
from there and remember there are not two suns.
If you are not in control of light you are in a confusion of shadows and conflicting
sources. When you know how to control lights you will amazed as to how few lights
you need to make nice lighting.
With good lighting you are trying to imitate real light and not make it look like
you had lit it.
Take advantage of the differences in indoor and outdoor light. The indoor light is
warmer (red) than outdoor light. Keep that and do not try to white balance to even
out the difference in the color temperature and you will have a nice cozy indoor
atmosphere.
If you are shooting on video, the way to make the video look good and not like
plastic is to accept that there are different sources of light and make the color
balance for the coldest light source (blue).
The best place to learn how to control light is to train as a still photographer and
study that technique. That way you will learn how to set lights on a portrait, how
to control light on different surfaces like silver objects, and as a bonus you also
learn about framing.
And realize that learning light is not a quick study. Donald Kendall said: "The
only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary."
